If you’ve visited your local Costco in the New York or Long Island area recently, you might have noticed a new offering alongside the bulk toilet paper and bags of fertilizer: A whole standby generator ! That’s right, you can get yourself a 22kWh standby generator system with all the bells and whistles of one available from your local dealer! While it might be tempting to break out the credit card and potentially save some money on a warehouse deal like this, in our opinion it’s rarely the right decision for a homeowner to buy equipment like this directly from a consumer warehouse like Costco, rather than a dealer or installer. We’re big fans of Costco’s discount prices, and this article is in no way meant to slight Costco or the brands who sell through Costco. We just want to help customers understand some of the risks you take on when buying your own equipment which requires professional installation, like a standby generator system.

While some things, like changing a lightbulb, are something most people can handle themselves, wiring is definitely no hobby! Electrical systems are complex, dangerous, and require technical know-how to properly handle, repair, or install. Let's go over some of the things to look out for when choosing a professional electrical contractor to handle your next project. Are they Licensed and Insured? Your local town or village requires electricians to have a license in order to work on permitted projects under their jurisdiction. If you had your cousin's friend come by to help run new wiring for the fridge in your basement man cave, then don't be surprised if the town makes you start that work over if they find out! You should always ask your electrician if they are licensed in your town or village prior to getting a quote or commencing a repair. They should be familiar with your town's specific codes and rules to ensure all work in your home is completed correctly. You should also ask for proof of insurance and similar paperwork which will protect both you and the electrician! Are they Certified? In addition to being licensed and insured, many electricians choose to join local associations to earn certifications in various electrical specialties. For instance, we're a member of the Suffolk County Electrical Contractor Association and certified with the National Fire Prevention Association to ensure our work is not only exceeding local electrical codes, but designed to maximize the protection of your home or business. Can they defend their reputation? Take a quick look at all the popular review sites. Does anything catch your eye one way or the other? It's important to pick an electrical contractor who is proud of their work and can tell you about the many satisfied customers they've had for projects just like the one you're inquiring about. Do they act like a professional? This one is pretty straightforward, and it's an easy one-part test; Would you trust the electrician with your family? Any time you hire a contractor to work on your home, this is exactly what you're doing: trusting them with your home and your family! If they don't act with the utmost respect and professionalism, what does that say about the work they'll do for you? We pride ourselves in treating all of our customers and their homes or businesses with the utmost care and attention. How long have they been in business? No matter how much knowledge someone has, sometimes time itself is the best thing to have. Along with licenses and certifications, a high quality electrician can show you the decades of work they've completed, and tell you if that work has stood the test of time . We've been in business for nearly 40 years, so we know a thing or two about brightening homes! Looking to get started with an electrician for your next project? Let us help!
